Gormley Statue

It’s not every day we lift a Gormley statue onto a roof, but it is all in a day’s work for the Smith & Garratt team. This one weighs the same as all the Welsh backs (the Welsh pack weighs 1.3 statues). Our job entailed designing two bespoke steel plates, opening-up the roof to fit the first and attaching the other to the statue’s feet – complete with a sheet of lead to weather-seal the installation, lifting the statue into place and securely connecting the plates. Unfortunately, we chose a wet day. Two roofers, two joiners, two engineers, a crane operator, a slinger, a banksman … and a surveyor … made short work of the job between showers.
